Isbjørnangrep

English version follows

Incredibly luck!

Yesterday two kayakers were attacked by a polar bear. They kayakers wanted to become the first ones to padle around the island group of Svalbard. They were at Nordaustlandet when the accident happened. They woke up by a polar bear attack - in the tent! The polar bear grabbed one of them and pulled him out of the beach. The other boy grabbed the shot gun - but it was broken! He then found the rifle and ran after the polar bear. When he was close enough, he managed to kill the polar bear without injuring his friend. The victim was luckily still alive - and had moderate injuries. It strikes me - how little can the injures be when you are stuck in the teeth of a polar bear that can kill a huge seal in seconds? Within two hours Sysselmannen came by helicopter and picked up the two boys. The hurt one has gone through a sugery at Longyearbyen hospital. They are both fine concidering the circumstances. What a good luck story - and quick thinking young man!

Weekend at Tyskerhytta

Weekends off are "sacred". We have to go out of town and out on trips! Unfortuneately the weather is not always on our side for the plans we make. Last weeked we were disappointed as the waves were far too high and the winds far too strong for the planned boat ride. But Nina and I found a solution: Kjell had wandered off to Tyskerhytta to have a weekend on his own. He did not manage to be alone! Friday night Damien went out with the boat and brought all our stuff, while Nina, Tundrak and I walked out to the cabin. A "nosiy" Friday evening was followed by a quiet weekend with good food, nice drinks, small trips, exciting reading and energizing sleeping. We hope the host enjoyed some company. At least the visitors were happy!

En EPOCA over

English version follows...

En EPOCA over

An "EPOCA over!

The EPOCA epoce is over! 38 scientists from nine different nations joined us for sampling and labwork on the European Project on Ocean Acidifcation. The scientists launched nine mesocosms in Kongsfjorden. Each of the 17 meters long constructions was equiped with a bag consisting of sea water. Each bag was added a different amount of CO2. From the sampling the scientists could find facts about the effect of acidification on marine life. The results of the work will be published later this autumn. Follow links for webpages below!
For us it was a bit strange when all this nice people left us. One big, well organized project leaves us with a loss less work than 30 smaller (and often less organized) projects. And the people in the group was very friendly and nice to have around. At the harbour we could'nt "not notice them", as one of the two harbour halls was made into a giant lab for the occasion. Moving the equipment to and from Ny-Ålesund was also a big job that forced a lot of planning and extra hours. Viking Explorer from UNIS helped to tow the mesokosms to the pier, while the Greenpeace ship Esperanza shipped them from Ny-Ålesund and back to Kiel. An exciting project and we are curious on the scientific results....

Work, work, work

Work, work and work...

English version follows...

Du baduba
du, baduba du
Baduba du badubadu

Work, work and work all dagen through
Work, work and work it's nok to do
So many boats and people, too
It is so much, Oh, skrækk og gru!

Ja, it's hard to be a harbour"man"
oooja, it's hard to work at harbour...

The days at Ny-Ålesund harbour is busy. Ships come at all hours; some small sailboats, other huge cruiseships with thousands of passengers. It is more than enough to do for the three of us working at the harbour. The big ships need hell from four people and one mooring boat when they approach the pier. Other boats manage everything on their own, and all we have to do is to provide them water and diesel. All boats have to pay a harbour fee that partly pays the bill for the scientists that are here. Without the cruise ships, the cost for the day would be far too much for most scientists that work here... This is unfortunate because the cruise ships pollute a lot. Some of them also gives more negative influence than neccesary! But luckily most people and boats are nice. We seldom have timt to talk much, but every now and then we can anjoy a quick lunch or breakfast on board, having "a smell n' taste" of luxury...

Fog

Vanligvis er juni "tåkemåned" i Ny-Ålesund. I år har vi også hatt tåke i juli... Vakkert og magisk!

Normally June is the "foggy month" in Ny-Ålesund. This year we also had some fog in July... Magic!
